The First Day of Summer

Words and music by Christopher Kent

The first day of summer, the eagles are flying
Out over the ocean in seagull disguise
They tell me that people have given up lifetimes
To sit by the water and hear their sweet cries
They swim through my dreams like the moon on wet sand
They don’t understand what they see
The first day of summer, the seagulls are calling to me

The first day of summer, the pilings are crying
A saltwater song with the taste of the sea
And someone is lying asleep by the water
Where no one can tell her the things that must be
Seaweed is growing in gardens of green
That no one has seen but the sea
The first day of summer, the seagulls are calling to me

The first day of summer, the ocean is sighing
Sea creatures burrow their holes in the sand
No one is asking for reasons or answers…
Do seagulls grow lonely so far from the land?
No one can say where the ocean will end,
Like a song from a friend flying free
The first day of summer, the seagulls are calling to me
