The Last Stomping Ground (on the Road to Oblivion)
Words and Music by Christopher Kent
There’s a guy on TV who talks about heaven
Says if I don’t listen I’m going to hell
Other folks tell me that death is oblivion
God is just a story that children tell
The man on TV says worship and obey
It’s a game of the soul that you win or you lose
Other people say it’s survival of the fittest
All you get is what you see on the news
Well I don’t believe this is
The last stomping ground on the road to oblivion
Or just a way to get to heaven or hell
The last stomping ground on the road to oblivion
Out of the garden ‘cause somebody fell
Neither one makes any sense to me
And there’s always somebody with something to sell
At the last stomping ground on the road to oblivion
And on the road to heaven or hell
Some folks spend their lives watching for the devil
So God won’t be angry at the end of the line
Others say we’re nothing but body and brain
Any other experience is “all in your mind”
Well, I don’t believe that life is an accident
Or that we’re trapped inside of our skin
But I don’t want to hear about a God who punishes
His own creations for original sin
‘Cause I don’t believe this is
The last stomping ground on the road to oblivion, etc.
There’s more to a person than flesh and blood
There’s more to reality than what you can prove
There’s more to human beings than sinners and saints
Born with a stain that we have to remove
I don’t believe in a random world
Or a god who demands my compliance
You see, I’m not buying the assumptions or the limits
That come with religion and science
‘Cause I don’t believe this is
The last stomping ground on the road to oblivion, etc.
