Just Won’t Be the Same to Say Hello
Last night I heard you crying
And I couldn’t find the words I used to say
Like some old time picture postcard
The rainbows always seem to fade away
We’ve had our share of good times
They just never seem to show up at the end
Just the same old consolation prize
Of having someone tell you that you’ll still be friends
By the time you really learn to love somebody
You never seem to have much left to show
I know you’re not telling me goodbye —
It just won’t be the same to say hello
It’s not so easy being honest
When you want so bad to play that lover’s game
But after all the smiles and tenderness
It looks as if it still works out the same
But all that wine, and those crazy songs we sang
I know them all so well now, and they just won’t go away
It’s just that after all this time I’ve been with you
It really hurts to sit and watch you slipping away
By the time you really learn to love somebody
You never seem to have much left to show
I know you’re not telling me goodbye —
It just won’t be the same to say hello
