I Know Who’s In There
Words & Music by Christopher Kent
I had a friend who acted in movies
He got to be one of the walking dead
I asked him to meet me downtown
He said, “Meet me on the movie set instead…”
I was startled when I saw him
He was scary enough to make you lose sleep
And he laughed when he saw my reaction
But I said, I know your beauty is only skin deep
I said,
 I know who’s in there
Though you’re really not yourself today!
 I know who’s in there
Though anybody else would run away
 Some only see our disguises,
 Others see right through
 I know who’s in there
And that’s who I see when I look at you
I saw her standing in the produce aisle
I was shopping at the corner store
 I could’ve sworn I knew her well
Though I knew we’d never met before
She looked up and we smiled at each other
And we were instantly the best of friends
And that never changed in all the years since
From the start we knew how the story ends
I said,
 I know who’s in there
 Though we’ve never met before, it’s true;
 I know who’s in there
It’s a wondrous sense of deja vu
 Some only see our disguises,
 Others see right through
Well, I know who’s in there
And that’s who I see when I look at you
We never know where life will lead us
Or who we’ll meet around the bend
But sometimes the face of a total stranger
Hides the heart of a long lost friend
It took a while, but I got lucky in love
We met on the corner and knew from the start
A kind of cosmic prearranged marriage
We had reservations in each other’s heart
Now we’re older on the outside
Sometimes we sigh when we look in the mirror
But it hasn’t changed our feelings at all
We look at each other and it couldn’t be clearer
We know who’s in there
It’s a sweet soul connection that we never outgrew
 We know who’s in there
The changes in the scenery haven’t altered our view
 Some only see our disguises,
 Others see right through
Yes, we know who’s in there
And that’s who I see when I look at you
