The Heart of Christmas
Words and music by Christopher Kent
Christmas came, but money was tight
No store-bought presents were in sight
John knew his kids had expectations
 For this year’s Christmas celebrations
So he asked their help to find new ways
 To celebrate the holidays
He told them, “Every year’s unique—
This year the spirit has to speak!”
So they gave the gifts of time and sharing
And made each other something daring
They worked to see who could be most clever
And had their best Christmas ever
They grabbed Christmas and made it happen
Though times were tough and they were feeling blue
Sometimes you have to make up your mind
To be the one who makes dreams come true
And you can do it, ‘cause the heart of Christmas is there inside of you
At Christmas Jane was all alone
The ones she loved were far away
So she decided that she’d help others
Find some joy for Christmas Day
She joined a group of carolers
And spread some joy on a wintry night
She baked some pies to give away
And helped her neighbors put up lights
Then she bought some toys for homeless kids
And called some old friends on the phone
And by the time that Christmas came
 She wasn’t feeling so alone
She grabbed Christmas and made it happen
Though times were tough and she was feeling blue
Sometimes you have to make up your mind
To be the one who makes dreams come true
And you can do it, ‘cause the heart of Christmas is there inside of you
Christmas isn’t always easy, the way we’d like it to be
But the spirit of the season isn’t found beneath a tree
It’s something we bring to life, a blessing we create
So share some kindness and some joy
And you’ll find you’ve got a reason to celebrate
And you can grab Christmas and make it happen
Though times are tough and you’re feeling blue
Sometimes you have to make up your mind
To be the one who makes dreams come true
And you can do it, ‘cause the heart of Christmas is there inside of you
