Does That Work for You?
Words and music by Christopher Kent
I knew a man who devoted his life
To reaching the top of the heap
He worked long hours at a job he disliked
And he said he never got enough sleep
He was clearly obsessed with the biggest and best
And he said, “One day I’ll prevail”
And I asked why he let so many good times go by
And he said, “I can’t afford to fail…”
I said,
Does that work for you? Does that work for you?
You hope you’ll be happy when your suffering is through?
Does that work for you?
I knew a man who was always depressed
He saw his life as a bad, rigged game
He had an endless list of complaints
And knew that someone else was always to blame
He said, ”I can see the deck is stacked against me…
I can’t get no relief”
And I asked how he’d ever make his life better
If he always blamed someone else for causing his grief
I said,
Does that work for you? Does that work for you?
It’s always someone else’s fault when your dreams fall through?
Does that work for you?
Sometimes it’s hard to change direction
Even when your choices suck upon closer inspection
But if your journey is leaving you tired and bitter
It’s never too late to reconsider
I knew a man who was always worried
That something was bound to go wrong
If things were going good for a while
He’d tell everybody, “It won’t last long”
He thought pessimistic was realistic
“Gamble and you’ll just lose your shirt”
And I asked why he never tried to reach for his dreams
He said, “If you don’t take a chance, you won’t get hurt”
I said,
Does that work for you? Does that work for you?
You let your dreams go ‘cause they might not come true?
Does that work? Does that work?
Does that work for you? Does that work for you?
You can change direction any time you want to
So ask yourself:
Does that work for you?
