A Talk With the Almighty

When Billy was a boy, he heard the preachers talk of God
He believed what they said, although he thought some parts were pretty odd
Then Billy had a dream; God was there, and Billy was too
And God was taking questions, so Billy said “I have a few…

God, they say you made the universe
Well, things down here couldn’t get much worse
In fact, I don’t know what to think of you
These crazy things they say you do
You sit in judgment, a macho guy
And smote your creations from the sky
That means you tell us not to kill
But then you do!
Can this really be true? Let me hear it from you!”

And God said:
Don’t believe everything they say about Me
When people look at God they see what they’ve been told to see
They take someone’s else’s word for how I’m supposed to be
So don’t believe everything they say about Me

Billy said,
Based on the stuff they’ve been telling me
You act like a person, not a deity
Some of what they say seems self-serving
A vengeful god is quite unnerving!
You give us free will so we’ll have a voice
Then you send us to hell if we make the wrong choice
That sounds like a setup
Why you would do that, I don’t have a clue
Can this really be true? Let me hear it from you!”

And God said:
Don’t believe everything they say about Me
When people look at God they see what they’ve been told to see
They take someone’s else’s word for how I’m supposed to be
So don’t believe everything they say about Me

Billy said: “They tell me that you need our adoration”
And God said: No! Why would I need that when you’re a part of me?
Billy said: “They say that there’s a list of things we’re s’posed to do”
And God said: No, all roads will lead you home eventually
Like me, you have the power to dream great dreams
And like me, you have the power to make them come true
And in the meantime, if you’d like to get to know me
Remember I’m inside of everyone, including you

Just make sure you
Don’t believe everything they say about Me
When people look at God they see what they’ve been told to see
They take someone’s else’s word for how I’m supposed to be
So don’t believe everything they say about Me
