Lotus Petals

Words & Music by Christopher Kent

Charlie was a businessman expected at a meeting
A lot of money riding on the facts he’d be repeating
He had to drive 100 miles, so he stopped to rent a car
And he took off down the highway, but he didn’t get too far….
He was thirty miles from nowhere when the engine died
In desperation, he stuck out his thumb to hitch a ride
Pretty soon a car slowed down and offered him a lift
He thanked the driver and then sulked, cause he was miffed
But in a while he stopped and thought: No reason to be gloomy;
Maybe there’s some reason all this bad stuff happened to me.
Then with a shock he saw the driver was a dear old friend he’d lost
If his car hadn’t broken down, their paths might never have crossed
And his friend smiled and said:

Chorus:
If you think that everything is going to work out fine, it will
Events will unfold like the petals of a lotus
And if you think that nothing’s gonna work out right ‘cause you didn’t get what you wanted,
Things will work out anyway—but you may not notice

When Jake was young he knew that love was pure and stayed forever
He knew he’d find his soulmate and they’d spend their lives together
And sure enough when he grew up he met that special girl
He knew their love was meant to be, it was perfect as a pearl
But in a while the magic turned to lies and irritation
And as he watched things fall apart he filled with desperation…
When she turned and walked away, he shed bitter tears
And he moped about that love he’d lost for a couple of years
Until one day it dawned on him his attitude was wrong
And then he realized he really liked a girl who’d been there all along
When his first love walked away, he thought his life was through,
But not only did he survive, he learned a thing or two!

Chorus

We can’t always get what we want
Life’s full of detours, and you never know where they’ll lead
But if you have faith that you’ll find a happy ending
Then it won’t escape your notice when you get what you need
—And you will get what you need

‘Cause if you think that everything is going to work out fine, it will
Events will unfold like the petals of a lotus
And if you think that nothing’s gonna work out right ‘cause you didn’t get what you wanted,
Things will work out anyway—but you may not notice.
